Belts with a snakeskin effect are a very popular style in the alternative fashion scene. Adding texture to the strap, which would normally be plain and smooth, gives a belt another dimension. The snakeskin finish can be produced with a solid colour or made to look like the colours of a real snake. But how are snakeskin belts made?

How are Snakeskin Belts Made?

Snakeskin belts are rarely made from real snake skin but rather from leather with a manufactured effect. Real snake skin belts are very expensive and are no longer considered an ethical choice, often made from cobra or python skin. The production of real snake skin belts is a strictly regulated industry.

Most snakeskin effect belts available to buy are made from synthetic material or real leather with a manufactured snakeskin effect. These belts are much more affordable and are considered by many to be the more ethical choice. The effect of the snake scales can be embossed onto the belt giving a texture to an obviously artificial non-snake leather product as the belt remains a single colour.

To more closely mimic the intricate patterns and colours of real snake scales, the texture and colour can be created by adding a PU layer, glued and stitched on to a leather or faux leather belt. This layer can be smooth with just a coloured pattern to look like a snake skin, very much like a standard printed belt that has a picture design. A smooth PU layer can look very effective but does not add the extra dimension of feel to the belt. For a more realistic looking belt with added interest many snake skin effect belts use a textured PU layer to mimic the feel of the scales on a real snake. Belts with this PU coating are often available in a solid colour like a black snakeskin or white snakeskin giving a subtle finish.

Coloured Snakeskin Belts

To add a further level of interest and realism the snakeskin textured layer can be coloured to more closely resemble the natural look of a real snake. Different colours can also be used to provide a bold alternative fashion vibe whilst still keeping a natural looking snake scale pattern. Snakeskin effect belts in red are a very popular choice for a statement belt, whereas belts in a more natural colour offer a more realistic looking snake skin effect.

Snakeskin Belts with Studs

Studded belts are very popular in the alternative fashion scene as are snake skin textured belts. A very popular belt in this area of fashion combines both metal pyramid studs and a snake skin textured leather belt strap. Snakeskin effect studded belts have the style of a studded belt but the added interest of the snakeskin effect on the section of the belt that is not covered by the studs. This style of belt is extremely popular in the alternative fashion scene especially with metalheads, hard rockers and bikers.
